About PM Internship Scheme 2024

The Prime Minister’s PM Internship Scheme is an initiative by the Government of India to provide young individuals, particularly students and recent graduates, with opportunities to gain hands-on experience working in government ministries, departments, or other associated organizations. This program is part of the government’s broader efforts to engage youth in public administration, policymaking, and implementation processes.

It aims to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth in top 500 companies in 5 years. With the goal of providing 1.25 lakh internship opportunities for the fiscal year 2024–2025, the Central government inaugurated the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme 2024 pilot phase. With the aid of this internship program, young people will be exposed to a variety of real-world business settings and job chances for a full year. One crore people would have access to internship opportunities in the top 500 organizations in five years.

Purpose of PM Internship scheme

  • To provide real-world exposure to young professionals and students about the functioning of government.
  • To promote skill development, career enhancement, and awareness about public policy and administration.
  • To foster youth participation in nation-building activities.
  • To provide financial assistance to young professionals and support them in getting work experience under PM internship scheme

Salient features of PM Internship scheme

  • Internship Duration: The duration of this internship shall be 12 month. At least half of the internship period must be spend in the actual working experience and not in the classroom
  • Educational Qualification: Candidate who have passed high school, posses a certificate of ITI, Diploma from a polytechnic college or a graduate with degree like BA, BSc, B.com, BBA, BCA, B.Pharma etc..

Eligibility Criteria of PM Internship scheme

Candidates must fulfill these requirements in order to be eligible for the program:

  • Age criteria: 21–24 years
  • Not suitable for full-time job
  • Families with members who work for the government are not eligible.
  • Those with degrees like CA or CMA, or those who have graduated from prominent colleges like IITs or IIMs, are not eligible.
  • Youth trained at Kaushal Kendras (skill centers) and Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) are also eligible for the program.
  • Candidates enrolled in online/ distance learning programmes are eligible to apply.
  • The qualifications for candidates should include completion of High School, Higher Secondary School, an ITI certificate, a Polytechnic Institute diploma, or a degree such as a BA, B.Sc., B.Com., BCA, BBA, B.Pharma, etc.

Applicants will receive a one-time financial support of INR 6,000 to cover incidental expenses in addition to the monthly stipend. Additionally, the government will guarantee that interns are covered by insurance through initiatives like PM Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and PM Suraksha Bima Yojana, with the government paying the premiums.

Monthly stipend

Candidates will get ₹5000/- as a monthly assistant for the entire duration of 12 months of the internship. Out of the total amount, the company will pay ₹500/- to each intern from the Company’s CSR funds, and the government will pay ₹4500/-.

How will a shortlist of candidates be created?

  • The criteria listed by the companies and the preferences of the candidates will determine the shortlisting process.
  • Criteria that prioritize less employability and guarantee more diverse representation from the candidate pool will be taken into account throughout the shortlisting process.
  • The Portal will make use of resources to provide representation for all facets of society, including Other Backward Categories, Scheduled Tribes, and Scheduled Castes.

The internships will run for a full year, with a minimum of half of the time dedicated to practical work experience. The goal of this strategy is to give participants useful employment skills. The government will cover the majority of the stipend; businesses will contribute a portion through their corporate social responsibility funds.
