TYPES OF SENTENCES

SENTENCE

A sentence tells a complete thought. Words that do not tell a complete thought are not a sentence.

Types of Sentences • Every sentence begins with a capital letter.

  1. Declarative Sentence (Statement)
  2. Interrogative Sentence (Question)
  3. Imperative Sentence (Command/Request)
  4. Exclamatory Sentence (Exclamation)

A Declarative sentence (STATEMENT) 

tells something. It ends with a period (.)

Example

  1. The children play at the park.
  2. Firefighters put out fires.
  3. I love chocolate ice cream.
  4. She is reading a book.
  5. He loves playing football.

Key Features

  • Most common type of sentence.
  • Can be positive or negative.
  • Birds can fly. (Positive)
  • Penguins cannot fly. (Negative)

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong – the dog barks at night. → (No capital letter)
  • Correct – The dog barks at night.

Interrogative sentence (QUESTION) 

asks something. It ends with a question (?) mark.

Example

  1. Who is he?
  2. Why do firefighters wear boots?
  3. Did you finish your homework?
  4. What is your name?
  5. How old are you?

Types of sentences

Questions

  1. Yes/No Questions – Can be answered with “yes” or “no.”

Example: Are you coming to the party?

  • Wh- Questions – Start with who, what, where, when, why, how.

Example: Where do you live?

  • Tag Questions – A statement + short question at the end.

Example: You like pizza, don’t you?

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong: what time is it. → (Missing question mark)
  • Correct: What time is it?

Types of sentences

Imperative sentence (COMMAND) 

tells someone to do something. It ends with a period (.)

Example

  1. Watch the firefighters climb the ladder.
  2. Class, stay in your seats. 
  3. Please pass the salt.
  4. Be quiet in the library.
  5. Call me when you arrive.

Key Features

  • The subject (you) is often hidden.

Example: (You) Sit down.

                 (You) Close the door.

  • Can be positive or negative.

Example: Stop talking. (Positive)

                Don’t run in the hallway. (Negative)

Common Mistakes

  • Wrong: can you help me → (No capital letter & missing punctuation)
  • Correct: Can you help me? (If a question)
                   Please help me. (If a request)

Exclamatory sentence (EXCLAMATION) 

shows strong feeling. It ends with an exclamation mark (!).

Example

  1. Wow, this is a great cat!
  2. At last, the fire is out!
  3. I’m so excited for the party!
  4. Congratulations on your graduation!
  5. Oh no, I forgot my phone!

Key Features

  • Often starts with “What” or “How” for emphasis.

Examples: What a great movie!

                   How amazing this is!

  • Used in stories, speeches, and emotional conversations.

Common Mistakes

  • Incorrect: wow, that’s amazing. → (Missing exclamation mark)
  • Correct: Wow, that’s amazing!

Additional Sentence Types of sentences (Advanced)

Beyond the four main types, sentences can also be classified by structure.

  1. Simple Sentence – One independent clause.
  • She sings well.
  • The dog is very friendly.
  • He loves playing guitar.
  • The sun rises in the east.
  • She speaks fluent French.

Types of sentences-

  1. Compound Sentence – Two independent clauses joined by a conjunction (and, but, or)
  • I wanted to go, but it was raining.
  • She studied hard, and she passed the exam.
  • He likes reading books, or he watches movies.
  • I have visited Paris, and I love the city.
  • She was tired, but she kept working.

Complex Sentence – One independent clause + one dependent clause.

  • If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
  • If you call me, I will pick you up.
  • Although it was late, she decided to finish the project.
  • When I arrived, they were having dinner.
  • Since she was sick, she didn’t attend the meeting

Write the correct end mark for each sentence.

  • 4. He rests on the bed _____
  • 5. Will is the best cat of all____

Write the correct punctuation mark at the end of each sentence. Then tell what kind of sentence it is.

  3. How distracted he is by the mountain summit
    in front of him __________________
  4. His mother insists that he work every day __________________
  5. Does anyone know how it feels to be facing
    the mountain __________________

  8. The thought of tomorrow’s climb makes
    it difficult to work __________________
